From the Local Cusco News Paper:
EL COMERCIO In spite of the fact that customs hindered their work: DOCTORS USE SICK PERSONS THEY CURED THEY GAVE MEDICATIONS AND COMPUTERS IN CHINCHEROS Yesterday, Carlos Sanchez, a Peruvian doctor who resides in the US, carried out a new journey of medical solidarity with the population of Huatata of the Chinchero district, province of Urubamba, with the participation of 7 North American medical doctors and 3 doctors from Lima. For more than 5 hours they offered medical care in the areas of dentistry, ophthalmology, neurology, internal medicine and pediatrics to a total of 250 patients who received not only prescriptions, but also the necessary medications, and in other cases even their eyeglasses. Dr. Carlos Sanchez, in this occasion, returned after two years to such communities, bringing with him two computers, used clothes, books, money/cash and much more. When being asked the origin of these resources, Dr. Sanchez responded that they are contributions of the Rotary Club of Chula Vista, San Diego, USA, and the Association of Peruvian Doctors who reside in that same country. The campaign was also accompanied by the Military School Franscisco Bolognesi, founded in 1955, among them Juan Valer Carpio, an engineer and Aliro Lira, a Peruvian doctor, just to name a few. Dr. Sanchez mentioned that this is the second day, since the first one took place last Thursday in the town of Andahuaylillas. There they provided medical care to approximately 800 patients, to whom they also gave the necessary medications. For this reason, the Mayor of Andahuaylillas decided to name him guest of honor and made the North American doctors members of the Society of Honored Friends of Andahuaylillas. In response, Dr. Carlos Sanchez announced today, as an humanitarian act and for the received affection, he will donate eleven computers to the local library for public access. The paradox was the behavior of the Peruvian customs, who confiscated medical equipment, which could not enter Cusco, due to the mistrust of this agency. "This time they kept some clinical transformers and last year we brought equipment to make a similar mission to the Amazons, but customs, in spite of having an authorization of the Ministry of Health, didn't allow it. Because of it we had to pay over a thousand dollars" Dr. Sanchez replied. He said that in most occasions it is a lot better to buy here, like in the case of the eleven computers, to avoid setbacks. "Even the medications in Cusco are cheap and nobody gives us problems. But in the US we have more dependable medication and they are free/donated" Dr. Sanchez explained, affirming that these medications are not expired, like others would think. The population of Huatata, when concluding the day expressed their gratitude with a general "huatida" and a mass officiated by a Catholic priest from San Diego, in which a lot of children were baptized whose godfathers were the doctors. Contrary to other doctors, the North American physicians demonstrated to have a greater sensibility for the health of the peasants. They touched kids with scabies, old women semi handicapped and others with similar problems. For example a neurologist, Dr. Pablo Rafer, personally removed the sandals from an old woman, examined her feet covered with dirt and did not even make a disgraceful expression. An entire lesson for our doctors. This team will return to its original country tomorrow, planning the possibility that these visits are carried out annually to cover the deficiencies of the medical system. |
